A Sad Loss

While battling her son's (Clarence Bernard Johnson ) terminal illness, tragedy hit. Murder-Suicide Tragedy, Estranged Husband Kills Wife, then Self, is the article from the Chicago Tribune, September, 2009. Unfortunately, this Murder was the death of Leslie's sister Christine by the hand of her brother-in-law. Leslie Brown Simmons had been a victim of domestic violence herself and fully understands the consequences, and has dedicated her life leading workshops on how to escape abusive relationships. She had recently counseled her sister, Christine Johnson Tyler, like any other victim. Mrs. Brown advised don't be surprised if your husband beats you one day and buys you jewelry the next. "She listened but did not take her advice" said Mrs. Brown Simmons.

October 12, 2009 Leslie Brown Simmons' beloved son Bernard who had worked side-by -side with his mother since the inception of Leslie's Place, transitioned and went home to be with the Lord. Although her loss was quite painful, she could rejoice in the peace in which God has given her, and that her son is no longer suffering, but has made it home in glory where she will see him again, one day.

Good Times

The ladies of Leslie's Place had a first time experience at the NA Convention January 2010, Downtown, Chicago. It was two evenings of meetings, fun and fellowship with familiar faces and friends. As one resident stated, "she had the opportunity to be in the presence of many different people from all over the world, who are battling with the same disease of addition, which are caused by different types of chemicals." Yet everyone was encouraged and inspired by the speakers who kept it real. Resident said, "She had the best time of her life, and now she can fight with more determination."

Leslie's Place was the guest of The Black Ensemble "The Message is in the Music" in November 2009. For most it was the first time at a live performance, and it was very encouraging, portraying how the Enemy works to kill, still, and destroy. However, witnessing God's love and victory through it all. It was very comical but very real!

December 2009, the ladies attended " Suited for Succes,"sponsored by Eden advocacy C.D.C. (Domestic Violence Org,) where the ladies were allowed to pick out 2 suites each to encourage them in their new life and the job market.

A night at the "Circus Spectacular" at the UIC Pavilion, November 2009 was fun, food and fellowship. Some road an elephant for the first time and some had a first time experience at the Circus. It was a great night for all!

Team Work

Leslie Brown Simmons kept her faith strong through it all, as she continues to work toward her mission to give the women here a "Second Chance". As her friends, board members, employees, residents and church members gathered around her with prayers and support.

The Annual Cup of Tea fundraiser in December 2009 was a huge success and raised over $7,000.00 due to the teamwork of all involved.
